VYAKHYANA  DANA BUDDHA
2002

acrylics and 23 carat gold leaf
on handmade bhutani rice paper

58 x 78 cm

uddha here is sitting in the Dana mudra (posture), an attitude of generosity. The thumb and index of his right hand are joined to form a circle in an evocation of the Wheel of Law, called the Vyakhyana mudra, which is an attitude of argumentation or explanation...

This Buddha is bestowing his blessings on us, as well as reminding us that everything revolves according to the action-reaction mode called
karma. The flower pattern of the background is Persian, and the gesso-raised gold pattern sustaining him is Celtic.
